Data storage space (SAG)

Disk space on ENCS network drives (also described as network shares) is allocated based on your account type and the groups you are in. Disk quota applies to each segment of disk space, and it is not transferable between segments. To access your disk space from Windows, use your ENCS account to map the network drive. In Unix/Linux, simply change to the directory where the disk space is located by using the "cd" command. The disk space to which you are entitled can be determined using the following table.

Notes:

1. Basic Space: This is the default disk space assigned when your personal account is created. It is in three locations: the Windows home (drive G), the Unix home (drive U) and the Web directory (drive W). The disk quota for this space is established in function of your status in ENCS, and cannot be increased.

2. Thesis Space: All MASC and PhD graduate students get 500MB of extra space for their research work. Full-time faculty members who are supervising thesis students get an additional 1GB of space, which is not transferable to students.

3. Disk Space Used For Research: The disk space for research purpose, PROFESSOR_USERNAME_FACDISK, should be allocated from the professor's private space(300GB so far)

4. Admin /Role Account Space: This space exists for the purpose of administration support. Thus, it is available upon request to a departmental chair, departmental administrator, and so on. The "account" associated with this space cannot be used for interactive logins to any ENCS system. It serves for sharing files among the group members (possibly only one person) and for e-mail if desired.

5. Course Support Space: This space contains the course material created the instructor. The "account" associated with this space cannot be used for interactive logins. The files saved in this space are archived after the end of each term and made available to the other professors in the same department, unless the current instructor decides to remove his/her course material.

6. Course Project Space: This space is used by students who require extra space for a course project. It is created for the students upon the request of the course instructor. The group "account" associated with this space cannot be used for interactive logins. Once the course is finished, this space is deleted. A course project account can be assigned to a single student, or be shared among several students working cooperatively.

7. Research Group Space: This space is made available to research groups in order to allow a basic presence within the ENCS structure (for example a web page to represent the group, filesharing space for cooperative work on documents, and so on). The space is in the standard group area and the professors can get 1 GB of space as a default. Any request more than that needs to be negotiated.

8. INBOX : Default incoming mail spool (Inbox), 87 MB quota (no exceptions). This space is usually accessed via the IMAP protocol (a mail reading agent or webmail). Direct access is possible only from the host login.encs.concordia.ca.

It is up to the user to name the Windows drive letter where no drive letter is given in above table. You can access the network shares by mapping them to Windows drive letters on your PC.

You can go to this web page to check your disk quota usage.

FAQ

As of August 22nd 2011, full time faculty benefit from an allocation of 300GB in file storage space, in addition of their home directories. This space is available on Unix or under Windows by mapping a share.

All graduate students registered in a degree program requiring a supervised thesis are entitled to 500 MB of disk space in the '/thesis/u/username/' directory, which is intended for storage of any thesis-related files.

Under Unix/Linux, 'cd' to the above mentioned directory to verify the presence of your thesis directory. On an ENCS-managed cut in Windows, the Thesis space is automatically mapped to drive T. On a Windows user-managed cut, you need to manually mount the thesis directory to a drive (say drive T:). The mounting point is '\\filer-thesis\thesis\u\username'.

The letter 'u' represents the first character of your login name and the word 'username' is your actual login name.

If you have problems, come or send email to our HelpDesk.

To facilitate access to a user's files through different services in varying environments, the user's files are stored in different directories on the network. Each user gets basic disk space in three network shares: Windows home (drive G), Unix/Linux home (drive U) and Web home (drive W). Additional network shares may be available.

Please refer to ENCS Storage service page for details.

Please follow the Document below to map a network drive in Windows from within Concordia.

To map a drive from outside of Concordia University, you must first connect to the VPN service. Follow the instructions found on the Concordia IITS web page Virtual Private Network (VPN).

Important: To connect to the VPN service you must use your Concordia Netname and Password. Then to map an ENCS network drive you need to use your ENCS Username and Password.

Once you've connected to the VPN service, you can map your network drive by following the Document below

First, double check your network disk space usage on this web program ENCS User Quota Check. If you see the word "expired" in the output, it means that you are over your allocated disk quota and your account will remain blocked until you return below quota.

To figure out the files using up most of your disk space, you need to remote login to login.encs.concordia.ca by SSH, and then issue command

bigfiles

The result will be output in a few moments, depending on the number of files on your network drives. In the result, you will find the top 20 files/directories consuming your disk space the most.  Delete or move them to your local disk or USB key.  Do not forget to check your disk usage on web program ENCS User Quota Check to ensure your network drives have enough free space.

NOTE:

  • ~snapshot directory in any network drive(deive G, U, W, etc) does NOT consume any disk space. It is the system back folder for user to resume the modified/deleted files by themselves.
  • Professors and Staff are assigned 30GB of basic disk space.
  • Students are assigned 1 GB of basic disk space distributed over their home directories: Windows home (drive G), Unix home (drive U) and Web home (drive W). This limit cannot be increased. Thesis students are entitled to an additional 500 MB located in the Thesis space (drive T). If additional disk space is needed, graduate students should go through their supervisor.
