How to install software by software installation link?

This is an auto-run web application, which helps to install requested software without user intervention.

I. Procedure

- User sends Service Desk (servicedesk@encs.concordia.ca) a request for software installation, including the following information:

  • Supervisor name
  • Machine name
  • A Static IP adress (wireless not allowed)
  • OS type
    • Windows 7 (32 bits or 64 bits)
  • Software name

-Service Desk sends user a link for software installation.

 

II. Requirements for using software installation link

- Use account with Administrator priviledge

- Use Internet Explore

- IE security level setting (by default): Medium-High 
Tools->Internet Options -> tab Security -> click Default level

 

 

- If user has different setting, make sure: 
(User needs to reboot machine for changes taking effect).

  • IE Compatibility View mode was on 
    Tools -> Internet Options -> click Compatibility View 

  • MIME Sniffing is enable 
    Tools->Internet Options -> tab Security -> Custom level -> Miscellaneous -> Enable MIME Sniffing -> choose Enable 

  • Active scripting is enable 
    Tools->Internet Options -> tab Security -> Custom level -> Scripting -> Active scripting -> choose Enable

 

- The application performs best if user:

- check above requirement settings 
- reboot machine to Windows 
- use account with Administrator priviledge to log in
- wait about 1 or 2 minutes until machine finishes its initial state (with check update, start antivirus application....)
- start the link which was sent to you with Internet Explorer

 

 

III. Troubleshooting

1. The installation stops and only shows text on page.

- Make sure IE Compatibility View mode was on. 
- Make sure to enable MIME Sniffing

2. The installation page just refreshes and does nothing.

- Make sure to enable Active scripting
