Netscape, Mozilla and Thunderbird email configuration changes

The following page shows how to change your e-mail client settings for the new ENCS IT Mail. This information is designed to be used with Mozilla 1.4.2 for Linux and Mail 7.1 for Windows. These instructions also work for the new Mozilla Thunderbird mail client. To change your mail settings follow these steps:

  1. Launch your email application (Netscape or Mozilla).
  2. Go to and click on Edit->Mail & Newsgroups account Settings.... This will open the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box.

  1. Under you ENCS, CS, ECE, CIISE, or GSU mail account select Server Settings

  1. On the right window under Server Name type: mail.encs.concordia.ca

  1. Under Server Settings on the same window make sure Use secure connection (SSL) is checked, see above figure. The new mail server will only accept SSL.
  2. Click on the Advanced... button, in the Server Settings dialog box, to open the Advance IMAP Server Settings dialog box.
  3. Under IMAP Server Directory type: mail/

  1. Click OK to close Advance IMAP Server Settings dialog box.
  2. On the left window select Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  3. Make sure the Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings, on the right dialog box, are as the following figure.

NOTE: If you are setting this from home make sure you use the SMTP server name of your own internet provider. We've provided the links for setting up the SMTP servers for Sympatico and Videotron.
  1. Click OK to close the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings dialog box.
  2. You may get a warning message, if you have setup filters. Do not worry, your folder names will not change. Click OK.

1.6 Warning Message
  1. Right click on the email account you just changed and select Get Messages for Account, you will be asked for your account password. Enter it and you will see your IMAP folders refreshed.
  2. You are done.
